A sport-tourer on MV Agusta mechanicals

The bike designers of the European Institute of Design of Turin combine forward-looking sportiness and comfort.

Looking back at the history of the brand, the students of the third year of the three-year post-diploma course in Transportation Design – BYT (Bike, Yacht and Train design) of Istituto Europeo di Design of Turin have developed a ’10/11 thesis project on MV Agusta mechanicals starting from the platform used by MV Agusta on the brand new F3, powered by a 675cc 3-cylinder engine.

Complete knowledge of functioning and use of the bike, more than any other mechanism, proved to be essential for the bike designers: analysis of existing models such as those of the MV F3 or F4 proved to be an effective training exercise.

The challenge facing the students was as follows: starting from a chassis and engine furnished by the company, preserve the identity of the brand, designing a sport-tourer for the near future, from now to 3 years. According to the original idea of the brief, the sport-tourer is a synthesis of typical MV sportiness and comfortable ride; therefore, a motorbike for travelling long distances without fatigue.

The entire class, guided by the coordinator of the course Luigi Giampaolo, addressed the project in two phases: a first phase of analysis of the brand, definition of the concept and of the value of sportiness as interpreted by MV Agusta. A second phase was dedicated to more practical aspects of the work, defining the design concept and related 2D and 3D renderings.
On completion of the work, each student handed in his/her project but only one was selected for construction of the life-size model.

Life-size model – Tricruiser - developed on the basis of an idea of Antonio QUITADAMO
The following students worked on the project: Francesco CANGIALOSI; Jacopo CHIOTTI; Linas DEGUTIS; Hyun-Seok KIM and Fausto TUCCIO.

The multi-layer Tricruiser life-size model with 3 cylinders and 3 round tapered exhaust pipes features a comfortable saddle that embraces the fuel tank, separation of the headlights to the sides of the front fork and the use of front and rear light guides. According to the indications of the brief that required a sporty sport-tourer comfortable to ride, the saddle has been generously scaled to cater to the needs of both rider and passenger, while the capacity of the fuel tank is sufficient to travel long distances, restricting refuelling stops.

Inspired by sports cars, the Tricruiser features a multi-layer fairing that hides air ducts that direct the flow of air towards the outside via diffusors.

Retracing the history brand, the life-size models is inspired by the F3, the F4 and the Discovolante.

It should be noted that this project is simply a styling project developed by the IED and is in no way related to the official projects of MV Agusta Motor Spa or its CRC Design Centre.
