Bang! What if your lamp remote control was a handgun…

In the “What If” section of the First Beijing International Design Triennial, two interactive lamps will unexpectedly surprise the public. Bang! is a desk lamp with a gun-shaped remote controller. When the user pulls the trigger, the light goes out and the lampshade knocks to the side, as if it has been shot. To turn it back on, simply fire the gun at it again, and the lampshade will rise up slowly and turn the light back on at the same time.

TikTikTik is the perfect light for reading or even just cuddling a bit before bed—or for people who usually forget to turn off the light! Pulling down on TikTikTIk’s chain sets the length of time the light is on. The further you pull, the longer the lamp stays on. The lamp chain retracts silently a few minutes before the timer runs out. The light then dims and turns off.

The above two works come from Taiwan-based design studio Bitplay Inc. Three ‘big boys’ with an average age of 32 founded the studio in 2009. Led by Zhang Weijia, a NYU graduate from Interactive Telecommunication Programs and former IT guy, and joined by his friends Zeng Guogang and Huang Hanwei, Bitplay was created as an incubator for their passion and ideals towards interactive product design that has a sense of humour, that brings a little magic to people’s everyday life.

Bitplay first came under the limelight in the 2010 Tokyo Design Week, where it received great praise and attention. Their work Bang! is taking part in the Beijing International Design Triennial, and will hit the markets in Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan this September.
