Split Sofa and Chair by Alex Hull

Alex Hull originally presented the Split Sofa, in collaboration with Gallery Fumi, at art and design fair PAD London 2012, and earlier this year he added the Split Chairto the collection.
The sofa is designed in a highly organic form which appears to be split apart. The whole form is made in leather and the inside is suede lined, so the exterior of the object is all-natural stylish leather while the interiors are soft and very tactile as if the leather is being parted to reveal an unprotected core.
The concept that inspired the Split project was the movement of the waves and the surfboard construction. The sofa evolves through its form, starts to expand to the other end, so it is asymmetrical in its design and a hybrid in a way, because the other end forms a kind of function of a chaise longue, so you can laid back into it.
The Split Collection perfectly denotes Hull’s philosophy combining contemporary technology with traditional leather craftsmanship, each piece is made by shaping an internal carbon composite core in the same way that a surfboard would be shaped and created, at the same time using traditional saddlery skills and upholstery skills.
