Majorca and K-1 by Giovanna De Avila
I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1980. Since I was young, I knew I wanted to study design, always playing with my hands, trying to improve objects, making them beautiful. So when time arrived, I began my Industrial Design studies at Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá but then moved to Barcelona and continued my studies at Escola Massana. But it was then when I fell in love with my career discovering the importance of the relation between a craftsman and a designer.
I feel a passion for objects and I try to make it tangible in my design’s formal structure. I’m not interested in innovating but in searching the beauty in objects. I believe this is my aim as a designer, the sensibility of beautiness. I think every object has to be functional and at the same time beautiful. I’m always trying to create a harmony between function and form. I believe there’s an emotion in every object and that emotion is transferred through form. Some of my designs are currently under production.
By the moment I’m interested in small series.
Majorca: an oil dressing set, is a homage to a traditional design in Mallorca. I tried to give the vase-like bottle simple voluptuous lines. The anti-spill-drop top is the reminiscence of the traditional Balearic design. The base is made in ceramic.
K-1 was conceived together with Industrial Designer Joan Sunyol. We are studying the possibility of mixing blown glass with silver. This is one of my favourite designs because of it’s rounded organic curves. It made me realize that simple lines can make a mundane object extraordinary.
