Chanel 2.55 is the iconic quilted bag that was introduced by Coco Chanel in February 1955, thereby the name 2.55. More than 50 years after the launch, it’s still as popular today as it was then. To celebrate it’s 50th anniversary, the bag was re-released in the fall 2005.
The bag has a double-chain shoulder strap and the most famous bag is the black one in calfskin. But even the other styles and colors are so so fantastic.
Everything about this bag is very Coco Chanel. No, really it is. Every detail about this bag reveals something about Mmm Chanels’ life. The brown lining is the color of the uniforms from the convent where she grew up. There’s a zippered compartment on the front flap and that’s where the woman kept her love-letters. Damn the 20 century, we don’t get love-letters anymore. We get e-mails. Somehow it just don’t feel as romantic. Rumors is that the love-letters was from an Nazi spy she had an affair with.
The shoulder strap was very unusual on luxury items at the time when the bag was made. But Mmm Chanel saw nothing unfeminine with having her hands free. She thought that the hands needed to be a viable to hold a glass of champagne or a canape. Oh, what a thoughtful idea. This bag is actually one of the first bags to have a strap.
And the less exciting back outside flap is where she kept her extra money she wanted to stash away. Or that’s at least what we have been told. Nothing about this woman was simple and I’m absolutely sure she was using the pocket for something more mysterious.
The most important about this bag is the quilted material. The material was based on the coats worn by jockeys. It’s said that Coco was fascinated by horse-racing and wanted to pay tribute to that in the design of the bag.
There has been a lot of different variations since Coco’s original design of the 2.55. Karl Lagerfeld revived the exactly same design in 2005 as the original bag. And the latest release was even more popular than the original.
Personally I adore this bag because of both the beauty and the history behind the bag. This bag is very iconic and the fact that it has a real history behind it, just makes it adorable.
The bag will make you feel classy and modern in the same time. This is a bag that has been worn by woman of all times. From the launching of the bag back in the 50s till today.
