AMA.MI

Standing polished and proud at Corso Sempione 7 in Milan’s nightlife district, ‘ama.mi’ is an anomaly for all the right reasons. The latest work of designer Donata Nicetta is a solo masterpiece that exudes a warmth and comfort that has become her signature in the industrial capital of Italy. Commencing from an architectural black hole, the 180 square meter premises has been transformed with bold vertical lining and clean square cuts that are evident in every detail of the lounge and synonymous with modern Italian design. With hues of autumn aligned on the wallpaper, the vertical lighting adds to the tasteful effect, which in turn reflects off the autumn brown dabbed ceiling, creating an unpretentious yet modish atmosphere. Wooden hues and furniture detail seem to be the prime superfluities in this oasis of interior art.

The ambience created by this Nicetta design is hardly a rigid work of art, but rather an ever changing canvas. Seasonal furniture set up allows the focus in winter to dwell on the warmth offered in the shades draping the bar. In summer the same structures are placed to readjust the focus through the detachable glass wall, bringing summer indoors. The vertical lighting, in harmony with the music, gradually change during the course of any given evening, offering a laid back lounge aura to an upbeat yet controlled music bar.

The design is reflective of the owner’s choices, its clientele and most importantly its locale. Nestled in the midst of industrial blocks of grey, characteristic of Milan, ama.mi offers a feeling of affability in style and service; both key elements in its evident success.  Doubling as a gallery of sorts for contemporary Italian art, and with a sizeable collection of fashion and design magazines adorning its dark wooden cabinets, it is sure to be a destination for design orientated travellers and residents alike.
