Emanuele Canova
Traditionally, industrial design has been seen as a synthesis of art and practicality. Emanuele Canova chose to add a historic touch to the above norm; the product of which is ‘Opus Prima, The Memento Collection’; an aesthetic furniture line that tells famous tales from classical antiquity whilst offering unparalleled comfort. This line marks the commencement in Canova’s independent career; one that has been carefully fabricated till date on a pedestal of innovation, elegance and the need to provide multiple functions.
The ‘Bucefalo’ sofa was designed to mimic the grandiose and agility of Bucephalus, the legendary horse that charged Alexander the Great to numerous victories. The ergonomics of the sofa can be seen in the vigilant choice of materials in the sofa and chair ranges. Canova employ’s the use of viscoelastic memory foam which was developed by the NASA Ames Research Centre to maximize safety of aircraft cushions. The open cell structure reacts to body heat and weight within a matter of minutes allowing the cushion to mould into the shape of the body it is under. This synthetic technology is hidden under a cover of natural leather, the colour of which is specifically chosen to compliment the material used in each structure, namely; wired and tubular metal, solid wood and bended metal sheets. The sum of his effort is a line that seeks to spoil any seated individual whilst doubling as a chaise lounge and bookcase.
In his expedition for inspiration through the era that preceded Christ, Canova architected vases that were named ‘Platone’ (Plato) and ‘Pitagora’ (Pythagoras) in recognition of their work with geometry. The vases which are the consequence of geometric morphing of hand blown Murano glass and leathers are welcome additions to this line inspired by history and geography. This exuberant collection, deeply rooted in historical thought, is a custom made collection that is making ripples amongst design enthusiast across Europe.
