Situated between the Bordeaux and Rhone wine regions in France, the Château de Marqueyssac was built in the 17th century, on the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley.
The castle is one of the most exquisite of the kind, attracting countless visitors annually. Despite being an architectural wonder itself, the gardens surrounding it represent the major attraction. It was not until 1860 that the owner of the terrain, at the time, Julien de Cervel, began work on the enchanting gardens we can visit today. Everything started with a few thousands of boxwood, linden and cypress trees. What was first intended as an intimate courtyard where the owners could ride their horses, soon turned into an ambitious project involving numerous architects and gardeners.
The result was an enthralling realm featuring five kilometers of walks, several terraces and rustic structures. Later on, in the second half of the 20th century, as the residence became rarely inhabited, the gardens remained neglected. However, in 1996, a new owner, Kleber Rossillon, took over the property and conducted an enthusiastic restoration plan.
His aim wasn’t to solely redeem the domain, but to give the place a new, fresh, luxurious appearance. He revived the old buildings, imported extravagant species and even built a course of water ending in a cascade. For a surreal lighting effect, thousands of tiny lanterns were placed underneath the trees. After a year’s hard work, the gardens were open to the public. The Gardens of Marqueyssac are widely renown for the exceptional design and the abundance of rare plants.
