The NOOK Chair by Henry Sgourakis

Henry Sgourakis has launched the NOOK chair, offering an inventive approach to furniture design.
NOOK is Sgourakis’ personal contribution to the resurgence of the arts and craft movement, harking back to an era of antique doilies and lacework.
Changing the perception of cheap and tacky doilies, Sgourakis has applied this detailed lace work to a contemporary furniture form, resulting in an original take on the modern armchair.
Sgourakis has explored ancient weaves to produce a purely handcrafted chair that is both functional and beautiful, and which can withstand all weather conditions.
“I wanted to use this ancient art form to create something modern, unique and comfortable,” says Sgourakis.
“The flexible fibre moulds to the body to create a comfortable armchair, as well as offering a distinctive design for any contemporary space.
“a piece that reminded my (Sgourakis) of my childhood, of the simplicity of life as it was”
Sgourakis is one of Australia’s most promising young designers, with NOOK having been shortlisted for the eminent Launch-Pad competition, held in conjunction with Indesign to help develop the careers of product designers in
Australia. In 2010 Sgourakis was one of 10 finalists in the inaugural SPACE+EDRA
residency program, his work hand selected by Massimo Marozzi.
Sgourakis has a passion for eco design, sustainable fibres, innovative material use and creative conceptualisation. Having an architectural upbringing and being surrounded by creativity from an early age, Sgourakis is committed to developing Australian design.
