Sugamo Shinkin Bank by Emmanuelle Moureaux
At a first glance one would never guess the purpose of this beautiful piece of modern architecture. Judging by the colors and light infusion, it is hard to think that these walls will host a credit union. However, Sugamo Shinkin Bank’s motto is: “we take pleasure in serving happy customers”, and considering their latest project, they do abide by it.
Peaking out from the exterior façade, a rainbow of twelve saturated colors creates a refreshing atmosphere and, through a gentle transition they become one with the sky.
Reflected onto the white surface, these calm colors transform into a gentle, warm feeling. In addition, during the night, they are illuminated, the light varying according to the season and time of the day.
Stepping inside, one is greeted with more pleasant surprises. Light is still one of the most powerful elements that the architect, Emmanuelle Moureaux, relies on. Immediately, sun fills the room penetrating through three elliptical skylights, integrating exterior and interior environments.
The unity with nature is achieved, also, through the dandelion puff motifs that float on the ceiling. Are you going to be stuck in the waiting area at the first floor? No worries, time will pass easily, since you start with a choice of 14 different colors of chairs. The second floor hosts storey houses offices, meeting rooms and a cafeteria, while the third floor is reserved for the staff changing rooms.
In case you are not planning a trip to Tokyo, Japan in the near future, let the photos speak for themselves and enjoy a bank where, hopefully money brings less trouble.
