Electrolux Design Lab 2011

Starting from 2003, Electrolux has created a global design competition named “ Electrolux Design Lab”, which allows to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students to propose new ideas for household appliances, based on a given theme. The top three finalists will be able to enjoy a monetary prize, while the winner will also have a paid internship opportunity inside the company in addition to it.

The concept  chosen for 2011 is “Intelligent Mobility”, smart ideas that can help improving and mobilizing existing technologies in the domestic space, but being always in line with Scandinavian design values, such as ease to use, care of the environment and design appeal. Selected  among 1300 projects, coming from 14 different countries, the 25 semi-finalists were able to interpret the current theme in many innovative and useful ways.

Adrian Mankovecky from Slovakia designed a portable washing machine, a small black device with four pre-installed programs, which, thanks to negative ions and steam, is able to clean stains from your clothes also during your travels. But if you are interested in new tools for your kitchen, Roseanne de Bruin from New Zeeland can surprise you with the Smoobo blender, a rubber ball with a surface made of rubber knobs, capable with a bounce to activate the kinetic energy batteries that, making the rotor blades spin, are able to produce your favorite smoothie. While Krzysztof Luchowiec from Poland proposes his Mohe, an appliance that is, at once, a vacuum sealer, a food carrier and a food warmer. By placing, in fact, the food in expressly made re-cycled bags, the device is able to vacuum seal it and then to warm the content when you will decide to consume it.

These are just some of the numerous juicy ideas coming from the semi-finalists of the competition, among which will be selected in July the eight finalists that in September will present their projects in front of a jury composed by expert designers that will have to make the final choice and award the top 3.
