BMW 328 Hommage
This year, the BMW Group Classic is celebrating the 75th anniversary of one of their most successful and beloved models of all times: the BMW 328 racing car. The construction of this vehicle represented a milestone for the automobilistic industry of the time, turning the roadster into a veritable emblem of the luxurious 1930s`. It was then that the creators of the sports car came up with the core principles of the BMW brand: dynamics, aesthetics and innovation.
The designers, Fritz Fiedler and Rudolf Schleicher, were the first ones to experiment combining: systematic lightweight construction, aerodynamic lines, optimum engine types, and outstanding suspension technology. The result was an unmitigated success, as the BMW 328 continues to be a source of inspiration for car manufacturers worldwide.
The BMW 328 Hommage, as its name suggests, is a tribute to the model launched in 1936, and it keeps to the concept developed by the original artists- sportiness and agility, whilst taking the patterns of design to a whole new dimension. The Group’s motto used to describe their Hommage cars’ collection: “Rooted in history, moving forward in design”, perfectly depicts the BMW 328 Hommage initiative and result. The Hommage prototype was conceived bearing in mind the principles imposed by the fathers of the 328 model, while employing the latest technological means and using the highest quality materials available.
One of the most impressive features of the BMW 328, both original and Hommage models, is the ultra light-weight construction and the agility this enhances. If back in the days aluminium and magnesium provided the best weight-stability ration, for the recently launched version, engineers used the revolutionary carbon fiber – reinforced plastic (CFRP). The result: a mere 1,720 lb. of sheer beauty! Another distinctive trait is based on the dynamism of the two-seater concept and the sleek dorless design. Last but not least, the upgraded variants of some BMW emblematic details such as the: kidney grilles placed in the front and wide-set tail lamps in the rear, make the Hommage model more than just a refined reinterpretation of the 1930s` sports car.
As for the interior design and materials employed, the Hommage edition is an absolute statement of elegance. With very few solely decorative components, the interior is rather minimalist and austere- in order to maintain the racing car spirit. Every single item was created with a specific purpose and so as to harmonize with the rest. The excellence of the details is yet another proof of BMW’s standards. The nuance and texture of the leather was chosen so as to complement the CFRP and aluminium finishes, the seams respect certain precise patterns as they are meant to improve comfort and aesthetical appearance, the instrument panel features 2 iPhones supported by special structures which increase accessibility, etc.
The launch of the BMW 328 Hommage model was a tremendous accomplishment considering all the enthusiasm with which it was received by the public! The BMW Group succeeded in creating a marvelous contemporary version of the original racing car, by making use of the highest technology and the most exquisite fabrics. Also, it is noteworthy to mention that the designers behind the project made a fantastic work in smoothly adjusting the initial shape of the BMW 328 into a flat, aerodynamic silhouette specific to the 21st century.
