The result of weeks of restless brainstorming on the behalf of the guys from Ziba (one of the most open and user-friendly design and innovation consultancies out there), the wonder-seat truly revolutionized the world of design. With a completely innovative architecture and appearance, the Jumpsuit is a perfect choice for conference halls or large classrooms for instance, due to its super-slim construction and anatomic build for maximized comfort.
The designers from Ziba came up with this idea when they had to move the headquarters to a new building and were faced with a space shortage. The creative team couldn’t settle for the available offer of folding chairs existing on the market, so they just came up with a new model which embodied literally all their aspirations and pursuits. They were aiming for an ultra-compact, easy to remove and store, flexible and ultimately, elegant product. The challenge was to make the model completely stable and reliable without jeopardizing the well-being of the seated person. In order to achieve this, the design engineers studied related features found in the architecture and construction of bridges and the human spine! As both of these structures have in common bearing an enormous weight at a much reduced footprint, they were excellent sources of inspiration for further analysis of tension and compression forces. After numberless sketches and physical models, the creators of the seat found the winning formula: plywood and sheet steel to successfully substitute bone and fiber. The articulated cantilever seat was born!
Still, there is so much more about the Jumpseat than just its fantastic concept and build! The refinement of the details takes the idea of ‘folding chair’ to a whole new dimension. Firstly, the materials employed complement each other neatly, offering the seat a very smooth figure along with enhanced functionality. Secondly, the details are those which truly make the seat stand out! The 4 inch flat Jumpseat is able to support up to 600 lb., and it is all because of the fabrics and textures used, and the ingenious cuts employed. Further, the distinct features and finishes of the model are a standing proof that its designers really had it all figured out! The plywood slats are cut at a slight angle so that they provide the seat with a gracious allure and subtle curve when compressed. Also, the delicate alternating recesses at edges were carved so as to prevent fingers from being caught! The high-density foam cushion provides excellent comfort, whilst remaining slim enough to allow seat to fold at an overall 4”. Last but not least, the sling-style wool seat covers were attached with Velcro, to facilitate cleaning and replacement! What else could you wish for?
The Jumpseat is a remarkable piece of furniture and a great alternative for the traditional folding chairs in auditoriums! It is truly exquisite how this product manages to cater for all needs and expectations of both producers and consumers: it’s cheap and simple to build, store and transport, can be manufactured anywhere (thus minimizing transport costs), it’s unbelievably thin and compact, extremely comfortable, and last but not least, it’s easy to clean or replace! And, as it’s creators like to put it, the Jumpseat also enhances the good mood of the guests, due to obvious reasons: no more pushing and squeezing in order to reach a seat in the middle of the row, no more back-pain after a prolonged conference meeting, and no more sitting on someone else’s old chewing gum you didn’t see. This product sounds almost too good to be true!
