California Roll House by Violent Volumes
California Roll House by Violent Volumes is a project able to show us how design and technology can join their efforts to make enjoyable to live also one of the most human-unfriendly environment, the desert. Made of fiber-reinforced plastic and supported by carbon trusses, the house is composed by modularized parts which facilitate a fast assembly and disassembly on site. The shape recalls a roll, in which the center constitutes the house interior and an extension of the wrap creates a platform in front of the entrance, suitable for outdoor activities.
Everything is especially designed to maximize energy efficiency: the exterior material is, in fact, an example of this, by reflecting heat from the sun covers to the entire surface and the glass panels are electronically controlled to change its transparency according to the intensity of the light during the different time of the day. It is also possible to customize lighting, thanks to the modularized skylights and windows that can be placed accordingly to the needs of the residents.
In addition to this, also interior space is carefully designed in order to save space: doors are, in fact, automated, thanks to hydraulic power, and bedrooms are separated using either curtain dividers or bookshelves with translucent mid-parts, which allow having privacy, but avoiding to sacrifice light.
