Emma Yeo
There is no doubt that hats and headpieces are slowly permeating through the walls of fashion as renewed subjects of modern day trends. This growing interest in millinery is allowing a generation of designers to combine the mood and styles of contemporary times with conventional techniques.
Emma Yeo , winner of ITS#NINE YKK Award is an example of such a generation, with her striking works which derive from this alternative method of merging the traditional with the avant-garde.
After graduating from her MA in Design Jewelry at Central Saint Martins, London, she ventured into the dream-like world of head-wear to explore and question the boundaries of fashion in an impressively sophisticated fashion.
Her signature “biomorphics”, is a manifestation of the surreal amalgamation of architecture, fashion and biology. She morphs sequential 2D illustrations into organic, almost fluid, 3D structures. This ‘hybrid design philosophy’ illustrates Yeo’s dedicated attention to the blending of innovative techniques with the perpetual values of traditional craftsmanship. Her exceptional pieces made of beautiful laser-cut wood, entail complex lines and architectural silhouettes mimicking something between nature and technology.
It is no surprise that this young accessories designer has already claimed many awards for her innovative sense of design, even more surprising is the fact that she has been making these couture pieces for only three years. What she has planned for the future, in terms of her creations, is a mystery – but what we know for certain is that there is a new, exceptionally talented, player in the arena of couture millinery.
