Charmaine Olivia
Charmaine Olivia is one of the chosen ones to design a poster for Lady Gaga’s new album release. This is not due to luck or any kind of chance but solely due to her unique artwork. The young artist living in San Francisco gets her inspirations from “skulls, glass bottles and messy hair” whereas she uses oil and ink as favorite tools.
Charmaine Olivia manages to engage seemingly contradicting adjectives such as cute, provocative, sexy and soft all in a harmonic symbiosis. Her art consisting of drawings, illustrations, paintings and silhouettes, could be labeled dark in a poetic sense embracing the supernatural in beauty itself. This perceived supernatural touch tries to relate to the artist dreams. Her work moves away from the “normal” to keep the mind busy and interested. This self-taught talent leaves us with remarkable silhouettes with eccentric headdress, women with cultural features like Aztech glorious drappings, a “50 states” collection as digital illustrations and an adorable deer wearing socks. Even Frida Kahlo’s unibrow finds a spot among such inimitability.
Growing up close to the sea, Charmaine Olivia has felt attached to the ocean ever since which explains the often found pirate-tale elements. Her subjects that she tends to keep out of “scene-prison” can be found on her online shop or admired during the “Shooting Gallery”-show in January 2012 in San Francisco.
