EXO Chair by Fetiche

Carolina Armellini and Paulo Biancchi, designers of Brazil based Fetiche Design Studio, created an eccentric chair in a collaboration with Schuster, a Brazilian furniture retailer. The two designers are known to push boundaries by searching for alternative meanings and references for the otherwise ‘typical’ functionalities and features of furnishings.  The nature of their recent design sparks from the theme of skeletal structures, in particular, the morphology of insects. The geometric Exo chair emulates the frame of an insect’s shell, performing as an exoskeleton for the user.
The tessellation of wooden triangles in the back counterbalances the inner leather seat. This sharply angled chair is held up stably by contrasting  and rounded wooden dowels. The final result is a bizarre, yet tantalizing concept for living room seating: a cradling frame that shelters and upholds the user.
Apart from the fact that the aesthetics are easy on the eyes and the basic functionality of the piece is welcoming, the Exo chair has a unique feel and atmosphere surrounding it. It presents the almost-taboo theme of arthropods in a complacent manner through Fetiche Studio’s abstraction of design.
