Evan Chambers
In mere words,
Being constantly surrounded by his parents’ metal working and ceramic studios, whilst growing up in Pasadena, must have definitely guided Chambers’ interests; however, it is while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo that he discovers his passion and talent for glassblowing and metalsmithing.
Now, he creates uncanny one-of-a-kind pieces (made one at a time, of course) in his own studio in LA. At the heart of his work is vases, art nouveau glass and leaf feather surface decorations - creating exquisite hues and textures. He also makes unusual retro space pistols fit for Marvin the Martian and intriguing sculptural lighting in colored glass, amidst other stunning pieces which take inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch, Lee Bontecou, Bella Feldman, and Tiffany, just to name a few.
Taking copper, bronze and glass, and transforming these materials into relatively complex and detailed works of art, which are infused with dedication and hard work, Chambers has already showcased his work in various museums and exhibition centers in the States.
His exemplary take on reworking ‘old’ materials in ‘new’ ways is dabbed with dark poetry pertaining to reflective glass and lustrous metals. Sometimes shrouded in irony, like the poppy flowers or hawks’ legs recreated from molds, each piece is unique and meticulous in design. The appreciation for these strange ‘objects’ is definitely intimate, not only for the artisan factor beyond the surface, but also due to the truthfulness of the materials and impeccable decorative techniques applied.
