Standing Broom by Poh Liang Hock

Standing Broom is the winner of the Red Dot award concerning the Domestic Aid category. It was designed by Poh Liang Hock, a young designer who has already won this same award last year for his Hold Chair.

Standing Broom was created based on a very simple idea:  after cleaning, broom users do not know where to stand their brooms.  On the floor? (picking it up may cause difficulties and possible pains). Against the wall? (not a very convenient location, where it might fall or even leave marks ).

With his Standing Broom, Poh Liang Hock has found a great solution: it can stand up by itself-  the users will simply have to apply downward pressure on the handle to fold the head of the broom, then by turning it clockwise, it will lock the broom stabilizing it completely. To get to broom back into use, the user will only have to turn the handle anti-clockwise and snap the head back into its original position.

The Red Dot award is an international professional design award for design concepts, ideas and prototypes. The aim of this award is to be “the defining platform that separates good ideas with good design solutions”. There are many different winner-categories that go from public space to habitat, mobility, and even bathrooms…This being said: congratulations to Poh Liang Hock!
