MG Icon Concept
MG unveiled the novel MG Icon concept car at the Beijing Auto Show, the first SUV car from the company, created by the MG global design team headed by British director Anthony Williams-Kenny. The change of the ownership of the company, now owned by the Chinese SAIC, seems to have left the classical shapes and lines typical of the brand unaltered.
The designers wanted, in fact, to pay a tribute to MG’s tradition, taking inspiration from some of the legendary brand’s most famous sports cars. The result is a four seat compact SUV, versatile and functional, where it’s not difficult to see the references with the heritage of the brand: such as in the front with the circular headlights and the chromed radiator grille or in the MGB GT inspired rear with structural lamps mounted on top of hunched wings.
MG has been awarded the prestigious ‘Best Concept’ title at the Beijing Motor Show, one of the most sought-after awards on the international automotive show calendar, beating other important competitors, like Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupe and Honda Concept C.
Williams-Kenny, commenting on the outstanding achievement, said: “It’s a great honor to win this very important award, particularly when the judges put the MG Icon ahead of so many other famous brands”. Rumors says that the car derived from the concept could hit the market already in 2014, but, at the moment, no plans have been officially announced by MG.
