Jan Taminiau

Ever since he launched his brand in 2004 and established himself in the Paris Fashion Week since 2007, Jan Taminiau has managed to forge a significant name for himself in the industry. The Dutch designer, who is now based in NY, continuously explores and experiments with the past in order to create astonishing and very original pieces of work. After being showcased at the prestigious Fondation Cartier, having created a window exhibition for the famous store Colette in Paris and trained next to talents such as Hubert Barrere, Jan Taminiau experiments and delights us with his collections.

Once again, he chose wool, a primitive material the realm of haute couture, which he personally defines as “an important style symbol of the past, but also of the future”. The grace of the collection must have been contained in that sunken, nostalgic feeling which surrounds his work and style which drew him to this choice; andultimately brought him to be part of the finalists of the International Woolmark Prize.

Throughout his work, Jan Taminiau brings haute couture to a more organic and natural aspect, as noticed in this season’s key nude tone and materials. This Fall, he chose cork, meticulously combined with sequins, which clearly recalls his desire to bring a piece of the future in his sentimental work. Notheless, Jan systematically translates a very dimensional aspect, where everything is precisely crafted and assembled; where, when composed together, dense, real, 3-D pieces that elaborated, naturally outstanding beyond belief.  His work begs us to question the meaning of this contemporanity, which can be stated as a perfect reflection of this century. However, the designer best defines his complex realm, where simplicity by stating “my work translates the asymmetric mirror of my life”.
