Davidova Belarus Fashion Week FW 2012
The 4th edition of Belarus Fashion Week came as a wonderful surprise. With each year passing, we can observe the whole fashion scene in the area becoming more homogenous, following a common direction. The increased cohesiveness existing among artists wraps up beautifully the concept behind this fashion week. A country of contrasts, Belarus provides a rich cultural environment, challenging for all creative minds alike.
The political turmoil the country has faced along the years contributed heavily to the developing of this country into something rather elusive and enigmatic. Caught in between Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania, the country absorbed the most interesting features present in the cultures of all its neighbors. During the Belarus Fashion Week we witnessed a quirky mélange of symbols and motifs borrowed from all these other states, neatly melded into exquisite, intricate garments. From Matryoshka doll reminiscing attire, to deluxe Kiev-sparkly evening gowns, the palette of outfits showcased was pretty vast and savory.
One of our favorites of the BFW was the collection designed by Marina Davidova. The signature style of the brand Davidova can be defined as romantic and refined. With an eclectic mix of sharp 70’s lines, old school Charlie’s Angels type of cuts, and Agatha Christie characters’ soiree inspired outfits, the designer manages to pull out a unique look. We can easily observe a Russian constructivist type of influence and the well-fitted leather coats make no exception from the rule. Reviving and reinterpreting the Pocahontas frayed jacket and skirt, Davidova takes this style to a whole new level. The combination of classical cuts with unexpected details such as frays, Russian necklines and a hint of oriental silk, makes the collection very appealing. The show starts strong, with a series of black outfits carved in heavy, majestic leather; following up next are a few outfits embellishing royal silhouettes and itsy waist-lines, carefully hand-sown in the finest silk; last but not least, the grand finale is marked by a select array of flax playsuits, projecting a sensual, alluring woman.
The artist managed to gain widespread recognition for her ingenious collection embodying eastern European motifs and long-lost oriental dreams. So far, Belarus seems to have quite a few promising young designers and we can’t wait to see more of their work!
