Facetat by Andreu Carulla
Andreu Carulla Studios are reinventing the plate with their recent exclusive dish design for El Celler de Can Roca. If you’ve been watching any amount of food network over the past few years you may have become bored with the so-called-beautiful plating techniques – a white square or circular dish with some drops of color scattered about – here the traditional plate becomes a sculpt-able piece of organic industrial design.
To the skeptics in the room: please remember that the purpose of this specific dish is to hold petit fours and delicate chocolates, not to be an everyday plate for sandwiches and salads. The dishes purpose is to allow the beauty of these delicate trifles to be complimented by their elegant surroundings. To allow the reflection of their dark, sumptuous colors to be magnified kaleidoscopically. And this futuristic little dish achieves those things, holding the treats like a hand. The organic nature of the design means that each chocolate or petit four will be paid attention to, attentively placed rather than simply dropped. In the dream house of my future I would pair this plate with delicate green glass teacups and a clean-cut mid-century modern table.
Another aspect of these that makes them my preferred dish of the future is that they start of flat – which means they are incredibly easy and cost efficient to ship, and unlike the clunky glass dishware that currently occupies my cabinets, these futuristic little trays take up very little space. Just flatten it back out and pop it back in the cabinet when your done.
