Simon Gao China AW 2013

Simon Gao’s  collection for AW 2013-14 was quite a spectacular surprise; dramatic and intense, it unveiled the story of an elusive urban character. The well-structured silhouettes projected an image of power and boldness, and the expose' was above all crisp, confident, and daring. The idea of androgyny was central to the collection- the designer managed to wittily blend the lines between feminine and masculine fashion by mixing across pieces specific for each gender, reinterpreting and appropriating trends, and most impressive, came up with a fresh and inspiring reinterpretation of the masculine skirt.

Each styling was very simple, clean, allowing the clothes to really come to life. All the outfits had one attention-grabbing piece: strong, beautifully constructed, somewhat minimal yet intricate enough to make a statement for itself. The rest of the elements of the outfit complemented this one key item wonderfully. There were beautiful masculine coats, vaguely oversized, with stand-up collars, bubble sleeves or large hoods; fitted, tailored blazers which elongated the torso and made up for a more royal posture; extra-long trousers to give a chic kick, and wrap skirts to wrap everything up smoothly. Sober, but with a playful twist, the showcase made an impact with each and every single look!

The collection was vaguely reminiscent of Jedi costumes, exquisite futuristic intergalactic travelers, and the infamous Haider Ackermann rigor. The silhouettes were fluid, projecting a tall-standing figure and a cinematic attitude. However, the pieces are extremely wearable and can easily fit into any modern wardrobe. The color palette was perfectly chosen, classic and simple: black, beige, white and grey, underlining the craftily cut pieces.
