In densely populated San Francisco it is difficult to create spacious and modern housing. “Stephen Phillips Architects” (SPARCHS) designed an innovative apartment building on Linden Street in Hayes Valley, the neighbourhood of traditional one-to-four story Victorian or Edwardian houses. This duplex housing project fits in perfectly and it is not only ample, but also contemporary and memorable.
This apartment building firstly catches attention with its black façade, and it is split into two separate split-level apartments. The ground floor has a garage and a main entry stair hall, where single staircase with white oak flooring and black handrail leads to both dwellings.
At the first apartment the living room, dining room and kitchen all share the same space.
On the same floor is located also bedroom and bathroom. The spiral stairs lead to the upper floor, where is another bedroom and bathroom.
The second apartment has bright and spacious living room with a vast built-in window seat and fireplace. The same level is shared also by a bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs, there is a dining room, that overlooks the level below, and kitchen, which opens up to an outdoor balcony. In addition, this level has another bedroom and bathroom. Staircase from the balcony leads to the roof, which has an amazing view over a city landscape.
According to designers, they wanted to create an apartment building able not only to animate the street, but also to appeal to modern lifestyle, breaking down separation between outside and inside. This living space offers a spectacle of the urban city from the cosy and secure home atmosphere. This design solution is not only modern and eye-catching, but also affordable and doesn’t take up much space.
