Cultural center Two Moon is a gallery and coffee shop in Gyeonggi-do, Korea, inspired by the romantic movie “Two Moon Junction” — the main characters, April and Perry, who have a lusty relationship, while April struggles, because she is engaged to another guy. Let’s stop here (no spoilers) but, though, this is what these parallel buildings are: two separated entities that create certain “romance” between each other.
Due to the lack of the budget, the architects decided to create an architecture design more angular, but that did not refrain them from making it very interesting. The buildings are connected by several elements: side cylindrical cuts, multiple windows facing each other, balconies that pop up here and there, central shared stairs and, obviously, the moon shaped cut in the facade creating a playful, cohesive and unique space. The team of an architecture firm Moon Hoon explained that the idea of the design of the architecture creates “a free spirited space, full of festivity and relaxed atmosphere.”
These “2 brothers’” main facade displays their astrological zodiac — the horoscopes representing each client. Each building has 3 floors, accessed directly by individual staircases, which has reduced the distance between buildings, taking advantage of the full size of the terrain, while enabling better sized spaces for rent. The top floors present gardens with cylindrical windows on its walls, which bring more light in breaking somewhat the harsher look of the rest of the architectural project.
This is a creative way of both — incorporating an inspiration brought by the clients (the movie) and the interpretation having a low budget. As the result, the Two Moon has a certainly unique look and very pleasant, light appearance, rather than the simplicity of geometric architecture design.
