SAMA Architects together with mob studio have designed Chapulín — a restaurant that features a variety of materials and fuses together characteristic elements of Mexico’s history. This restaurant design idea in Mexico combines modern and rustic materials native to the area to create something totally unique. The tiles that line the walls were custom handmade by a group of women in a workshop called “El Alacrán”.
Each and every tile was made to follow the gently curving hallway that leads you into the restaurant’s lobby. A walk through the lobby takes a time to immerse him or her into the minutia of each rectangle and what it stands for.
Once you reach the end of the long hallway, you’re greeted with more natural elements. A suspended ceiling mirrors the wooden flooring and wicker details that make up the space. Planks and beams are placed at striking geometric angles, leading your eye to the large glass windows, through which greenery and sunshine flood, and basket weaving techniques is another charming reminder of the culture in which the diner emerged. The bar area offers cooler materials like granite and glass, whose shine and modernity contrast wonderfully with the wood and wicker accents.
A rickrack pattern of black and white ceramic tiles covers the walls of the private dining room, located off to the side of the restaurant. The pattern becomes mesmerizing as it climbs the vaulted ceiling — goes up, over, and all around to the other side of the room. The circular table allows guests to enjoy their meals in close contact with a chef and fully submerge themselves in the dining experience.
One last room brings the whole place together and make this restaurant idea even more charming: the wine cellar. It displays the finest wines and mezcal brands on slanted wooden shelves, with lights illuminating them from above. Great wine turns this authentic cultural meal into a fine dining experience; it’s just that extra touch of elegance that makes partaking in a meal at this beautiful restaurant exceptional with a wonderful restaurant design idea.
