Ukrainian designer Dmitry Kozinenko designed metallic shelving system called “Field”. This metallic shelf looks simple and minimal, but, most importantly – it creates an optical illusion, through the clever use of linear, geometric forms.

Standing in the front of shelf, it doesn’t look as a shelf at all – it looks like a flat grid of metallic lines. But looking from aside, ledges are visible – the metallic rods are bent and have depth, turning out to be shelves which can hold up the objects. Thus, playing with our perception and hiding the depth of the shelve, looks as if objects are just levitating mid-air in front of the metallic grid.

“Field” is practical and decorative at the same time. Its minimal design and transparent layout make this metallic shelf as a perfect design object in any contemporary living room. Plus, “Field” is available in different colours – black, white and gradient.

The Kiev-based designer loves to play with the idea of perception, designing unexpected objects, such as visually imbalanced tables or furniture series with an abstract shadow illusion. This time, he surprised everyone with this illusory metallic shelf. Let’s see what else he will create in the future!

Lebanese interior architect and product designer Richard Yasmine created an unusual set of shaped hand mirrors called “Ashkal”. These nostalgic objects are shown in the modernist light – they are simple, minimal and shapely.

Ashkal” in Arabic means “shapes” or “forms”. Mirrors are mimicking Euclidean shapes – oval, circle, square, triangle, rectangle and a pentagon. They are cut out of slim sheets of polished stainless steel. Each handle seems like a continuation of the mirror itself, as it is made from the same material in the same thickness.

When mirrors are inserted into pedestals, made from brass, metal or marble, they appear to cut them into halves. The designer describes his work as “a surrealistic oversized fashionable cutlery set“.

“Ashkal” was commissioned by the Sursock Museum, located in the heart of Beirut in Lebanon. The 1912 building of the museum itself is spectacular, as it is combining Venetian and Ottoman styles. Museum was established in the sixties and since then is known as a contemporary art institution.

Richard Yasmine dedicated this set of hand mirrors to Sursock Museum, being inspired by stained glass windows on the museum’s facade and referencing the era when Sursock museum first opened its doors. Mirrors are sold exclusively at the museum’s store.

In San Francisco’s Financial District recently opened “Leo’s Oyster Bar“. That’s the place where people can experience a vintage and breezy tropical vacation in the midst of the most business-oriented part of the city.

Owners of “Leo’s Oyster Bar” wanted to recreate their nostalgic vision of a “cocktail and oyster bar of the Golden era” – where the champagne is very cold, and the oysters are served hot”. This concept speaks not only about the menu but also about the design – the “anti – minimalist” place is filled with pictures of retro pin-up beauties covered in Hawaiian flower garlands, colourful floral wallpapers and oversized plants, and coated in wood panels and polished marble floors. Designers of the place Ken Fulk and Jon de la Cruz described their work as “a place where 1950’s Beverly Hills meets Manhattan club”.

Entering the bar, there is a plant-filled lounge with tropical motif cushions. Behind it is located the main dining room space with leather banquettes and mahogany panels. The centre of attention in the dining room is the long onyx-topped bar, which in the evenings is illuminated from below.

“Leo’s Oyster Bar” is the fourth restaurant in the “Big Night Restaurant Group” (others are “Park Tavern”, “The Cavalier”, “Marlowe”). Wife-and-husband owners of the group Anna Weinberg and James Nicholas (fun fact: the oyster bar is named after their son) have been able to create a distinctive feel to each of their restaurants. Their objective is to keep the restaurant experience polished to a high gleam  with extraordinary design, warm service and delicious food, prepared by their chef-partner Jennifer Puccio.

The world’s first museum dedicated to roses has recently opened in Daxing – the district famous for cultivating roses – in Beijing, China. The Rose Museum blends traditional and historical cultural influences withcontemporary architecture.

The Rose museum is wrapped in semi – transparent stainless steel facade, total 300 metres long and 17 metres tall and perforated with papercut pattern of Chinese roses. The silky looking wall is detached from the main building and creates half – open courtyards between the facade and main building, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. During the day, in the courtyards, facade forms patterned shadows, whilst in the night, glowing lights from the inside project shadows of the flowers outside. This performance of lights looks even more spectacular in the reflection observable across the lake.

Walled courtyards are traditional in Chinese architecture, as they create the perfect balance between man, house and nature. According to architects “the main challenge with the rose museum was to find a modern Chinese identity for a building which significance is so deeply rooted in Chinese culture“.

The opening of Rose Museum in May coincided with The World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) Regional Convention, where participated over 30 countries. In the 100 – hectare rose park were exhibited over 2000 species of roses. This event, not only the building itself, is historically relevant to China’s culture, as the cultivating of roses dates back to 11th century B.C. The rose museum tells about the history of Chinese roses, the geographical distribution of the species, early rose fossils, and depictions of roses in art, ceramics and clothing.

The museum has been designed by architecture company NEXT Architects.

Famous Italian fashion house “Valentino” dedicated it’s theatrical Fall 2016 Haute Couture Collection to William Shakespeare – as it is the 400th anniversary of his death.

Both designers of the fashion house – Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri – are Italians and their cultural surroundings deeply inspired their Renaissance themed Haute Couture collection. Furthermore, many Shakespeare’s works are set in fantasy Renaissance Italy. Every of 61 looks demonstrated key details of Elizabethan time – pearls, draped chiffons, opulent gowns, delicate embroideries, high collars, puffed sleeves, riding boots and brocade capes.

An important detail is a hairstyle  – it was parted and model’s faces were framed by tiny bits of gold wires. The Shakespearean theme was evident also in the choice of a soundtrack. Craig Armstrong’s instrumental version of “Kissing You” from famous Baz Luhrmann’s film “Romeo + Juliet” was playing during the second half of the show. The show closed with a dramatically oversized cape in the legendary colour of “Valentino’s red”, designed for “La Traviata”.

This was the final collection made by the famous Italian creative duo – they have been working together for more than 7 years – as Chiuri left Valentino for Dior. That, and, of course, the prominent name of the brand itself, were the reasons why this Haute Couture runway was so spectacular.

Fashion house “Viktor & Rolf” created Haute Couture Fall 2016 Collection, using selected fabrics and garments from their past seasons.

Duch Designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren describe themselves as “fashion artists,” and their artsy approach is dominating in their most recent collection “Vagabonds”. The old pieces from their previous collections were torn, mixed up and updated with layers of tulle, ribbons, and buttons to create new shapes.

The collection was inspired and named after vagabonds in the works of British novelist Charles Dickens. In his novels, homeless characters wander around Victorian London in roughed – up and fancy attire. Multicoloured buttons, dimpled top hats, patches, and boots – all present in this Haute Couture Collection, gave this impression excellently. The show was opened by notorious “Coke” sweatshirt, followed by garments gradually becoming larger, as more and more tulle was used, and concluded with various colossal dresses.

“Vagabonds” is not only notable example of current trends in Haute Couture – recycling and conscious designing – but also a remarkable creation of art. The fashion show was accompanied by Radiohead’s “Creep”, sung by a choir. Possibly, the song’s choice gave the suggestion what kind of person could walk around in these wearable pieces of art.

Ukrainian design company “Levantin Design” created geometric floor lamps called “Fitments”. The concept of this design is not to hide metallic constructions and sharp angles, but to do the contrary – display and emphasize the geometric shapes.

The concept of the floor lamps gives the impression of an unfinished state – light bulb and wire are visible, because nothing is hiding them, but, at the same time, colourful metal makes the simple frame look more interesting. These unusual design objects look simple and light, so visually they don’t take up much space, even if they are pretty big – lamps are 1,5 metres tall.

“Levantin Design” is founded by three young designers, who are siblings. By having their family design business, they already became widely known not only in the Ukrainian design scene, but also worldwide. They have already developed their own unique style by creating other geometrically shaped objects made from metal, such as chairs, coffee tables and even hangers. “Fitments”, which is their last work, is featured in the prestige “DESIGN Book of the Year Volume 7” between other 730 designs awarded in 2014.

In densely populated San Francisco it is difficult to create spacious and modern housing. “Stephen Phillips Architects” (SPARCHS) designed an innovative apartment building on Linden Street in Hayes Valley, the neighbourhood of traditional one-to-four story Victorian or Edwardian houses. This duplex housing project fits in perfectly and it is not only ample, but also contemporary and memorable.

This apartment building firstly catches attention with its black façade, and it is split into two separate split-level apartments. The ground floor has a garage and a main entry stair hall, where single staircase with white oak flooring and black handrail leads to both dwellings.

At the first apartment the living room, dining room and kitchen all share the same space.
On the same floor is located also bedroom and bathroom. The spiral stairs lead to the upper floor, where is another bedroom and bathroom.

The second apartment has bright and spacious living room with a vast built-in window seat and fireplace. The same level is shared also by a bedroom and bathroom. Upstairs, there is a dining room, that overlooks the level below, and kitchen, which opens up to an outdoor balcony. In addition, this level has another bedroom and bathroom. Staircase from the balcony leads to the roof, which has an amazing view over a city landscape.

According to designers, they wanted to create an apartment building able not only to animate the street, but also to appeal to modern lifestyle, breaking down separation between outside and inside. This living space offers a spectacle of the urban city from the cosy and secure home atmosphere. This design solution is not only modern and eye-catching, but also affordable and doesn’t take up much space.

Italian designer Andrea Ponti, who is currently living in Honk Kong and working in a “Ponti Design Studio”, created three unusual and fun kitchen utensils made from matte plastic. It consists of a salad bowl and two differently shaped tea infusers.

“Diga” is a two color multifunctional salad bowl. Supposedly usual salad bowl has an unexpected feature – a disk at the bottom. It can be turned counterclockwise to drain water, thus transforming salad bowl into a strainer, where vegetables can be washed and drained. Turning the same disk clockwise, drain locks, so the vegetables can be served like in a regular bowl.

“Koma” is a tea infuser which has a round base and a long handle made from a stainless steel. The steel cover opens and closes, allowing to fill in or empty the tea infuser easily. Besides, this it works as a spoon, as it allows to stir tea.

“Torus” is another tea infuser, but with a different design. It is donut shaped and twistable to S- shape, so it can be easily hanged to every cup. It is accompanied by a case which is able to contain up to three tea infusers. Additionally, they can be used for a dry storage of a loose tea.

All three kitchen utensils are designed for “Ommo” – a new design-oriented brand firstly introduced at the “Ambiente” show in Germany on February, earlier this year. The philosophy of this brand is to create good looking and user – friendly and functional items. These three original, minimalistic and colorful pieces meet all the guidelines, as they are useful, original and made from affordable materials.

Floating plants are something we can see in sci-fi films, however, now it’s not only possible, but also available for all enthusiasts of technology, design and, of course, gardening. This project is called “LYFE”.

“LYFE” is a follow-up to FLYTE: a levitating light which hovers by magnetic levitation and is powered through the air. Now, the same Swedish designers went one step further, starting Kickstarter campaign for “LYFE”: this time levitating are not lightbulbs, but planters. They use the Maglev technology – it makes plants float mid-air, using a powerful magnet, which pushes against an electromagnetic base. The creators say, that they were inspired by the long and dark Swedish winters, so they wanted to create something, what can bring the light and life to our daily lives.

Zero gravity plant growing system is not only innovative, but also have a scientific advantage: it’s proven, that magnetic fields can speed up the ripening process, as they enhance plants metabolism. Moreover, it also looks amazing, because of the minimal, clean and simple Nordic design.

LYFE is divided into three parts. The magnetic base, which is made from oak, causes levitation. Reservoir, a cleverly designed drainage system, reduces over-watering. Planter itself, molded from silicone, is designed not only to float in the air – the 12-sided object also rotates around itself in 360 degrees. Spinning allows an even distribution of sunlight on all parts of the plant and makes it look even more futuristic.

In these planters are grown special Air Plants. These species of plants do not require soil and can get all the nutrients and moisture, absorbing it through the leaves.
Let’s hope that this Kickstarter campaign will get a lot of support and in the nearest future floating plants will be a common object in everyone’s house!

Pets are human’s best friends, and we have been sharing our living environment with these animals for millenniums. As trendiness has become significant characteristic of our living space, now it is time to make stylish not only everyday objects meant for us, but also the ones used by our cute friends.

Apparently, pets can sleep almost everywhere as long as they are not disturbed, but now there is something, which might seem more appealing for them and their owners as well. Young Belgian designer Geerke Sticker has taken notion “concrete” to the next level, using ultra high strong concrete (UHCT) to make this pet bed not only trendy and stylish, but also extremely strong, thus combining good looks, strong surface and cosiness. It is made from two mirrored parts in a bowl shape and put on three wooden legs, so this seemingly heavy object can be easily moved around.

This concrete pet bed is made for Belgian industrial design company Dils & Mander. It has been exploring UHCT over 5 years in order to bring this material closer to our homes, using it to make objects of everyday use, for example, sinks or bowls. The possibilities and advantages of concrete are endless, such as strength, durability, surface resistance and colour variations.

Certainly, animals cannot really appreciate the fashionable side of their favourite sleeping spot, but their owners undoubtedly will. However, the winners are both, as animals will have their personal space and their owners – an original and useful design object. In addition, pet owners will be sure that their loved animals are safe and sound, because concrete is almost unbreakable – at least by the cute paws of our little friends.

Design and furniture have been together for so long, that now sometimes it’s hard to tell where the furniture ends and design object begins.

Student of Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design of Prague Vendulka Prchalová created a table, which is rather unusual. Her idea was to deform classic parts of the table to make it look as an animal in the motion. The term “locomotion” itself means the power of a living creature to move from one place to another.

This artistic table can be assembled specifically for each customer, so the number of variations is infinite. As the parts of the table are already prefabricated, customer can choose himself, which zoomorphic form he wants. Hence, there won’t be two identical tables, but the designer’s outline will be recognizable.

This artistic table is exhibited in DMY Berlin, which is the most important independent design event in Germany, under the label “New Talents” supported by IKEA Foundation.

As Vendulka says, the classic wooden table is her favourite furniture object and she got the idea of this table’s design after asking – if a table could run, would it run as a mantis or grasshopper?
