At the beginning of June was the time to jump into the tram Nr. 4 and get out only at the last stop which happens to be “The Portal” of Art Academy of Latvia (LMA) – annual fashion show where Fashion Department students present their latest collections. Oil fragrance, industrial environment and fashion – it all comes together to create the perfect mood for various fashion interpretations and place where new enthusiasts can dictate the fashion world – at least for this one night.
Young talented 3rd year Latvian fashion designer Dana Jasinkevica who always find a way to surprise and show off the new way of telling her story. This time it is about people who happens to be “travelers by their being” – are very curious and have anxiety more than others. “Wonderlust” collection plays with a purple-pink prints in contrast with black. Detailed cuts and stunning hats are this collection’s handwriting.
Zane Prokofjeva fashion show almost turned into the ballet performance with mysterious story behind it. Collection “Initio” reflects 3 phases of transition from one social status into another and rituals which are related to it. The devil is in the details – that is the theme for Arvils Linde collection “Magnificent Bastard”. Muscular shapes, rough materials and on top of that hair braids in place of ties.
But if you look forward to dive into the Northern traditional swimming rituals during winter time Monta Apsane has translated it in the fashion language with her latest collection “Captured”. There are more and more from ready-to-wear collections with feminine fragility, urban conceptions to unconventional solutions with reflection to monastic life or even snow men and creatures from other planets.
Each year LMA students find a way to surprise with both collections and environment by coming up with totally new concept and visual message. This year wasn’t exception and now we can just wonder what we can expect to see next spring. But while students are looking for new inspirations and muses do not miss out the opportunity to refresh your wardrobe with this year’s show stoppers at concept store “Paviljons” (Terbatas street 55, Riga). Latvian fashion still has some stories to tell!
