The start-up company Closca Design have launched their latest streetwear, the bicycle helmet Fuga. Closca is committed to the use of bicycles as the optimal means of personal transportation in the urban landscape. Carlos Ferrando and Rafa Cerdá who founded Closca Design in 2013 realised that conventional bicycle helmets were not appealing to the way urban cyclist think and live.

The two main requirements for this kind of streetwear were to be able to collapse the physical volume of the helmet when not in use and to avoid compromising on style and safety when used. The resulting concept looked somewhat similar to J.F. Sebastian’s hat in the movie Blade Runner (1982) or the Tron (1982) combat discs. The helmet structure is basically three concentric rings that are hinged with two stable positions, folding only when empty. The Fuga is well ventilated when in use as there is space between the rings.

The Closca Fuga is the 2nd generation streetwear from Closca, providing both safety, functionality and style.  Closca Design collaborated with the Polytechnic University of Valiencia and the company CuldeSac to develop the helmet. A minimalist approach was used, along the lines of  the design philosophy of Dieter Rams (Braun) and Jon Ive (Apple),  to combine and balance function, safety and style.

The Closca Fuga is available in black or white, with a range of accessories such as a red or brown visor, leather insert (Aviator edition) or wholly cap insert (Nordic edition). It is available in three different sizes, accommodating head diameters from 54 to 62 cm. A perfect fit means full protection. Depending on size, it weighs 250-290 g. The collapsible structure is 121 mm tall when extended for use and 60 mm when collapsed, making it easy to fit in a purse or backpack. The volume of the helmet effectively is reduced by 50% when not in use.

It is safety certified according o EN1078/CPSC, making it compliant with European, American and Asian safety standards. The certification is also valid for children over the age of 6. The helmet is, on average, 23 mm thick made of reinforced expanded polystyrene and polycarbonate to give maximum impact absorption capability with minimum thickness.

The streetwear Closca Fuga won the Red Dot design award in 2015.
