Alexandra Westfal
Alexandra Westfal is the young Latvian founder of Flair, the Milan based t-shirt label which resurrects classical elegance through quality and unique Swarowski embellishments. Although her passions were firmly understood since her youth, her education in fashion begins with courses at Central St. Martins in London, and then proceeds to the course in fashion design at the IED in Milan.
Her experiences in the industry vary from journalism, blogging, advertising and assisting in the organization of the Baltic Fashion Federation’s events. All of this has motivated and supported her to accelerate towards her dreams, transforming her into inspirational role model for all dreamers. Design42day is proud to present and interview this young and fresh designer to all our readers.
When and where did you first develop your interest in fashion?
I always knew I wanted to be in fashion. As a young girl, I was constantly sketching, and most of the times – clothes. And then there was an art school just in front of our house, so my mother took me there immediately. Like many designers curiosity has always driven me towards new experiences, therefore I decided to go abroad and study fashion in Europe.
Have you ever considered studying in Paris? If so, what intrigued you to come to Milan?
Paris is amazing, but I have never thought of going there to live and study. For some personal reasons Milan became my first choice.
Which designer, in the history of fashion, would you enjoy to work with?
Oh, well… there are so many of them, that I would be happy to work with everyone. But for now, let’s say – Alexander McQueen.
Would you say growing up in Riga and subsequently moving to Milan has changed your interpretation of fashion in some way?
Absolutely not. As nowadays we are surrounded by modern technologies, international magazines and we are able to travel, the tastes and style changes negligibly. I mean that in my case the location did not affect the way I interpretated fashion.
Nowadays, we see a great amount of t-shirts with incorporated slogans and messages
It’s great! Everyone tries to promote his or her own vision of this world, why not?
What gave you the inspiration and motivation to start your own t-shirt label? Where do you see the future of the label heading to?
The idea of making an exclusive t-shirt came spontaneously just in front of a jewelry shop. Inspired by magnificence of diamonds, I always wanted to make luxury look affordable for every woman. That’s how my brand Flair was born.
The future seems positive, so let’s just wait and see.
