IED has given its backing to the event and will present the “Aka Carillon – John Cage 1912-1992”, a project by Chiara Demaria, former Sound Design student.

The design (dedicated to John Cage) is beautiful and delicate, almost reserved in nature. Yet it is the end product of extensive experimentation with a sound that manages to encapsulate the fascinating musical theory of the master that inspired it.

Completely home-made, the design comprises a glass cabinet which allows the sounds produced inside to filter out. Inside are two music boxes, two strips of perforated paper and several objects. An interview with Cage is printed on the paper, one strip featuring the questions and the other containing the answers. Every letter “o” is perforated. The holes work in tandem with the mechanics of the music boxes to produce random, open and infinite note sequences which are never the same. These small resonant objects need the audience to set them in motion and to create a unique performance every time.
