From April 17th to 22nd, h 10 am – 9.30 pm

IED Rome, in conjunction with Laboratorio Dagad, will be showing at Fabbrica del Vapore a selection of the finest examples of projects the students in Product Design have been working on in the Robotics design lab this year.

IED Design Rome, headed by Laura Negrini, has been running the Robotics design lab for 3 years now with the support of Federica Pascucci, PhD (DIA Department of IT and Automation, University of Rome “Roma Tre”) and Alessandro Spalletta (Industrial Designer) who contribute to the 3-year Product Design degree course under the stewardship of lecturer Marika Aakesson. The students develop project concepts around the topic of the integration of robots into our society.

This is particularly important because the projects examine ways in which robots can be useful for the elderly. As such, the students have designed a robot that can help people incapable of performing certain tasks/functions, their loved ones (spouse, children, grandchildren etc.) and health sector professionals. None of the projects use robots as replacements for human beings, but instead consider them as back-up in case somebody doesn’t arrive or can’t make it. This frees up time and energy for giving the care and human attention that robots can’t. The robots that have been built are intended for everyday tasks in the home and to aid independent physical rehabilitation. They are also suitable for stays and rehabilitation in hospitals.
