Rollywood, a soft experience

Carolina Pinto and Ylenia Borghetti are two students from the three-year course in Product Design at IED Rome. They have created Rollywood, a practical all-purpose object designed as a graduation project on Co-Housing.
Halfway between a mat and a carpet, Rollywood is unobtrusive and noiseless underfoot, and looks like a parquet or tiled floor. But, with a single gesture, it takes shape.
Conceived as a place for socialisation, Rollywood is not an object but a space, a lifestyle for adults and children. It changes according to the needs of the moment: it may be rolled up or laid out, creating different worlds and turning into a personal space or a place to be shared with others.
It is made up of simple materials, wooden and fabric, which give it a natural touch.
It is quick to set up: you just need to pull the handle to unroll Rollywood and enjoy its soft fabric and coloured cushions, which can also be used to leave messages. Personalisation and communication are the main features of the project.
Rollywood is not just a class project: the Lago company really liked the idea, so much so that the drawings of the project were exhibited in the Lago Flat at the Salone del Mobile 2011 of Milan. The two young designers have also been offered a two-week design residency at the Lago company.
