Futuristic Floating Plants

Floating plants are something we can see in sci-fi films, however, now it’s not only possible, but also available for all enthusiasts of technology, design and, of course, gardening. This project is called “LYFE”.

“LYFE” is a follow-up to FLYTE: a levitating light which hovers by magnetic levitation and is powered through the air. Now, the same Swedish designers went one step further, starting Kickstarter campaign for “LYFE”: this time levitating are not lightbulbs, but planters. They use the Maglev technology – it makes plants float mid-air, using a powerful magnet, which pushes against an electromagnetic base. The creators say, that they were inspired by the long and dark Swedish winters, so they wanted to create something, what can bring the light and life to our daily lives.

Zero gravity plant growing system is not only innovative, but also have a scientific advantage: it’s proven, that magnetic fields can speed up the ripening process, as they enhance plants metabolism. Moreover, it also looks amazing, because of the minimal, clean and simple Nordic design.

LYFE is divided into three parts. The magnetic base, which is made from oak, causes levitation. Reservoir, a cleverly designed drainage system, reduces over-watering. Planter itself, molded from silicone, is designed not only to float in the air – the 12-sided object also rotates around itself in 360 degrees. Spinning allows an even distribution of sunlight on all parts of the plant and makes it look even more futuristic.

In these planters are grown special Air Plants. These species of plants do not require soil and can get all the nutrients and moisture, absorbing it through the leaves.
Let’s hope that this Kickstarter campaign will get a lot of support and in the nearest future floating plants will be a common object in everyone’s house!
