Design on a Wildcard

A delicate Chandelier made from LEGO bricks is one of the creations by 7 new designers presented at The Tube exhibition concept

7 new designers, 6 white containers, 5 recognised companies and a significant exhibition. On 9 April, Kolding School of Design opens the container doors to the exhibition concept The Tube at the World’s largest design fair Il Salone in Milan.

For the second year in a row, Kolding School of Design introduces the answers of young designers to how and why design can inspire and spark new processes.

All of the 7 designers have been given a wildcard to think innovatively, transcend boundaries and test ideas in collaboration with 5 of Denmark’s leading companies.

Tobias Tøstesen has taken LEGO’s famous brick into a world of design and architecture on a 1:1 scale. With a delicate Chandelier, built from 7000 crystal clear bricks, the new designer from Kolding School of Design reveals a new potential for the world-famous brick.

The designer duo Christian Troels & Michael Knap has rocked REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansen’s iconic collection of furniture classics and created a rocking horse based on the unique, stretched element, WoodUP.

ECCO’s ergonomic image has received a neo-feminist kick by the gigantic stiletto created by Louise From. But, is Achilles a piece of furniture, a statement, or pure Gaga?

- The objective of The Tube is that the designers show what they are made of and put themselves out there and perform, outside of the school’s ‘incubator’, says Curator Karen Kjærgaard, Kolding School of Design.

Since spring, the participants of The Tube have worked at full throttle in order to be able to present the results of the designer-company collaborations. Usually a design process takes from one to three years. The Tube concept skips a few steps.

- Especially, in this time of crisis, it’s important that we facilitate experiments such as The Tube; that we actually use the designers that we educate, and that we turn our words of culture and growth into action, Karen Kjærgaard continues.

The purpose of the Milan venture is to market Kolding School of Design on the international design stage together with leading design schools such as Royal College of Art, Saint Martins College and Design Academy Eindhoven.

The Tube will be exhibited in Milan’s popular Ventura Lambrate area from 9-14 April, 2013. The exhibition s funded by Kolding Municipality, Danish Design & Architecture Initiative, Innonet Lifetstyle, Danish Horticulture and Danish Ornamentals, the Augustinus Foundation and the Toyota Foundation.

At the exhibition in Milan, Martin Mencke and Sebastian Askari Schmidt, both students at Kolding School of Design, will present their interactive project Urban Planting, which encourages giving flowers using elements such as humour, action and a masculine attitude. The project is funded by Danish Horticulture and Danish Ornamentals.
