Seconda Pelle by Fabio Novembre

Seconda Pelle literally means “second skin” in Italian. Other than referring to the football jerseys exposed in the exhibition, this title symbolizes the reverence most Italians have for their football teams; a veneration that goes beyond fierce cheers and chants at the stadium or in front of the television, and takes form in a permanently imprinted sign of faith on one’s skin, like an invisible and indelible tattoo.

That being said, A.C. Milan, the oldest football team from Milan, celebrated their 113th birthday at the Triennale di Milano in mid-December with a powerful exhibition curated by Fabio Novembre. During the special inaugural event, several works of art by the students from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera were sold for charity.

The exhibition, which is located in the Sala d’Onore of the museum, creates a surrealistic grand setting. On the fringes, two immense symmetrical classical busts are revisited and cut in a manner that creates an optical illusion of the tell-tale jersey. At the center, between the two improvised corridors of colorful jerseys, a magnificent statue of five men, huddled together with exaggerated limbs, fills the space with feelings of union, camaraderie and strength.

Along with the exhibition, Novembre’s studio also curated the book, “Seconda Pelle, the complete history of A.C. Milan Jerseys 1899-2013″, created especially for the occasion.
