Barcelona Design Week
Isabel Roig: If BCN Design Week did not exist, it would need to be created urgently
Barcelona plays in the major league when it comes to design. However, we are in a very competitive world, which is something that is also transferred at the regional and city level. Several European cities come to mind when speaking about design: in addition to Barcelona; London, Madrid, Milan and Stockholm are distinguished, although there are also many others – perhaps smaller – that are beginning to be strongly committed to design, such as Dublin, Turin, Tallinn and Valencia, to name a few examples. There are increasingly more cities taking action in this area. It is, however, a competence with a positive outlook and this is what keeps people alert and makes them more creative, thinking of alternative solutions and seeking actions that consolidate and maintain position.
Barcelona, always the pioneer on many issues, could not be left out of the Design Week international circuit, which came about just 10 years ago. In 2006, BCD created the Barcelona Design Week, the international design week, which is in its sixth edition this year. This initiative has contributed to Barcelona consolidating its position as one of the references in design, innovation and creativity, and it has become one of the annual events of reference in the sector. The quality and prestige of the more than 100 speakers who have participated, the success of the different topics addressed and the increase in attendee numbers affirm that BCDs commitment was a sound decision.
Barcelona Design Week not only enables a finger to be placed on the pulse on the hottest topics and what is happening in the world on the matter of design, it is also an opportunity to find out about Barcelona’s design and the people and companies who have made design essential to their success, as well as an opportunity to visit exhibitions, celebrate award presentations and network with other entrepreneurs and professionals in the sector. There is no doubt, if BCN Design Week did not exist, it would need to be created urgently.
