Description

Orbit is a casual adventure game. The participant finds themself as a small robot, alone in orbit, around an uninhabited planet. The mission is to collect enough fuel and supplies from orbiting fields of space junk, so that the participant is able to repair themself, and make their way home. The game is a prototype for a much larger adventure, in which players explore a series of worlds and create for themselves a series of objectives, as they seek their ultimate goal of finding their way home.

Communication objective

The objective of Orbit was to create a world of engaging detail, while maintaining a simple graphic style. Anthony focussed on the tone of the game, and further developed the game experience through the sense of scale, sound effects, and graphic style. The constant motion and droning sound help to create an immersive experience for the player to feel somewhat helpless and lost, but hopefully they would remain challenged to explore their new world. To play the game, players must capture enough blue globs of fuel to refill their spaceship tank, shoot asteroids to find more fuel, and stay in a safe orbit.

Tools used

The game was created in Adobe Flash Professional. All graphics and illustrations were created in Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Soundbooth was used for the creation of some sound effects, by using recorded samples and then mixing and compressing sounds, created in other applications.
