“Understanding Multitouch” by Sumit Paul – ADAA Finalist

Biography

Sumit Paul is a designer with a passion for creating simple, thoughtful and typographically sound designs. With a design background spanning many related disciplines, such as printing technology, graphic design, programming, and animation, Sumit is always on the look-out for new and exciting ways to present his ideas, inform and educate.

 

Description

Understanding Multitouch is an instructional website, dedicated to better understanding of DIY multi-touch devices. The aim of the project was to develop something for designers, so that they would be encouraged to experiment, and empowered with a new and exciting design technology

 

Communication objective

Optical Multitouch Tables are based on the principle of light, reflected into an infrared camera. The infrared camera is cabable of detecting shadows from our fingertips. The Multitouch Tables incorporate software to convert the fingertip shadows into touch points. The project included an instructional website, dedicated to providing a better understanding for DIY multi-touch devices, as a resource tool for designers. The objective of the project was to communicate and educate the many steps in how to create a multi-touch prototype. The website offers interactive instructions, and encourages designers to experiment with this new and exciting technology.

 

Tools used

All of the animations were done by using Adobe Actionscript 3, in Flash Professional. The artwork was crafted with Adobe Illustrator, and code for the published flash+html file was edited in Adobe Dreamweaver.
