Try to remember the immense efforts you put into wrapping gifts, making origami or just a simple paper boat with a receipt. Once you've seen what The Makerie Studio achieves with different types of paper, you would just feel even more helpless.
The Makerie Studio is an artistic duo, formed by Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscroft, born to conceive, design and build unique 3-D pieces of fine paper, carved and stylized with the utmost attention to every little detail with patience and passion. Julie and Joy started collaborating when they were university students. Thanks to a common interest in sculpture and a love for special papers, and after building up some experience working with other artists, the two girls decided to partner up and establish their own studio.
Since its inception in 2009, The Makerie Studio has created pieces for huge advertising campaigns both in Italy and in the UK and worked with photographers such as Thomas Brown and Lucia Giacani. The Studio works either for commercial and artistic purposes and both for private clients and institutional ones. Makerie Studio’s art pieces were featured in editorials for magazines such as Vogue, Vogue Accessory and Wallpaper*Magazine; and in the windows of Gucci and Printemps Paris, to name a few.
Paper seems to be extremely fragile, and the challenges that this poses does nothing but make it even more fascinating for the two designers. As they say, sometimes they still strive to understand how to make the paper do exactly what they want it to, but looking at the results it is immensely worth the struggles.
The two designers take inspiration directly from the materials they work with -the range of prints, textures and finishes the paper comes in is incredible, and it helps them defining who they are and constantly improve their technique.
Fortunately for us, the duo is not even thinking about abandoning paper anytime soon, indeed they are working on the creation of a line of accessories and decorative furniture. So, stop messing up with glue and scissors and, hopefully, in few months you will have one of their breathtaking and surprisingly elaborate work of art at your own place.
