SCAD SCHOOL OF DESIGN
The SCAD School of Design offers one of the most comprehensive programs in design education in the world, encouraging creative thinking in interdisciplinary, collaborative classes. Fostering innovation and facilitating relationships with distinguished companies and firms as well as governments and charitable organizations, the School of Design prepares professional, adaptable thinkers who will lead in the creation of a positive future.
Graduates from the SCAD School of Design are risk-takers, exhibiting confidence in their ideas by anticipating trends and envisioning alternative futures. They consider the environmental, social, economic and political impact of design. With incredible opportunities for industry-sponsored class projects, corporate partnerships and life-changing travel opportunities, the SCAD School of Design provides an unparalleled learning environment enriched by real-world experiences.
In the past year alone, the SCAD School of Design partnered with an impressive assortment of top professionals and businesses through a record-setting 37 sponsored projects, applying the university’s interdisciplinary collaborative approach at every turn. SCAD’s unique academic philosophy and practice prepare students for productive careers by immersing them in a professional environment throughout their academic lives. The SCAD School of Design stimulates collaboration across departments, cultivates opportunities to gain practical experience, creates partnerships with external partners on real projects, and provides exposure to accomplished, experienced experts (SCAD professors and external professionals) in various fields.
The SCAD School of Design philosophy is at once simple and revolutionary: “We define good design as a product, system, service or idea that generates a memorable, valuable and positive experience for the customer,” said Victor Ermoli, dean of the SCAD School of Design, “and our facilities and curriculum mirror this mindset, emphasizing strategic thinking and echoing similar priority shifts in the design profession.”
Led by Ermoli and his dynamic approach to collaborative, student-focused education, the SCAD School of Design has enjoyed unprecedented success in recent years, receiving praise and top nationwide rankings from prestigious publications such as BusinessWeek and DesignIntelligence. In its 2011 edition of “America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools,” DesignIntelligence selected Ermoli as one of the 25 Most Admired Educators of the year for exemplifying excellence in design education leadership.
The SCAD School of Design consists of world-class undergraduate and graduate programs in design for sustainability, design management, fibers, industrial design, jewelry and objects, and service design.
Simulating experiences is no match for actually participating in real-world industry projects and working in environments that reflect corporate settings. SCAD School of Design graduates, therefore, are prepared to contribute from the very first day on the job and continue to succeed throughout their careers.
“By partnering with the leaders of the design industry on a regular and repetitive basis,” Ermoli said, “we are building the next generation of knowledge to propel all of us into the future.”
