NEW DEHLI, INDIA

A Contemporary Sustainable Residence Engaging with its Environment

Nestled within a prime suburban neighborhood, an exceptional residence captures attention with its engaging design and harmonious integration with the surrounding streetscape. This contemporary sustainable house boasts a captivating external appearance while seamlessly connecting with a meticulously landscaped outdoor environment. Let’s delve into the architectural features that make this residence truly remarkable.

A Grand Entrance:

At first glance, the entrance appears conventional, but a closer look reveals a striking element—a large cantilevered timber-clad wall gracefully extends over a reflective pool. This projected wall transforms into an inverted L shape, forming a generously shaded portico. Designed to allow just the right amount of morning sunlight into the formal foyer, this canopy overhang sets the stage for an inviting entrance.

Courtyard-centered Design:

The internal layout of the residence revolves around a central courtyard located towards the corner face. This courtyard acts as a visual centerpiece, creating a sense of openness throughout the building. It cleverly divides the space into formal and informal areas interconnected by a staggered linear passage. The front formal zone features a verandah that seamlessly connects to the well-manicured lawn, offering a perfect setting for formal dining and gatherings, accentuated by a captivating fireplace.

Informal Living at its Finest:

The rear part of the house encompasses an open plan kitchen, dining, and informal living area, providing direct access to private garden spaces. The well-oriented south-facing greens allow ample winter sunlight to filter into the informal lounge and kitchen, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Towards the southwest, the master bedroom suite takes center stage, offering dual perspectives. The fully glazed master lounge faces the internal courtyard, while the bedroom itself overlooks the serene rear garden.

Elevated Serenity:

Ascending to the first floor, four additional bedrooms await, including another master suite. Positioned to the north, this master suite opens up to a private balcony that overlooks the enchanting internal courtyard. Above the ground floor formal space, a fully glazed pavilion serves as a versatile multi-purpose area, providing an elevated vantage point to appreciate the surroundings.

Privacy and Sustainable Design:

The west face of the ground level ensures privacy for the residents with a solid street-side facade. Above this, a thoughtfully designed wraparound timber louver system acts as a solar control screen, effectively creating a self-shading facade without the need for external sun shading. The house embraces passive design principles, with key rooms and spaces oriented to the north, optimized for solar shading. Windows are strategically positioned to promote cross-ventilation while minimizing exposure to the east and west.

This exceptional residence exemplifies the fusion of experiential design and sustainable architecture. From its captivating entrance to its courtyard-centered layout and innovative use of materials, the house seamlessly connects with its environment. By incorporating passive design principles and privacy-enhancing elements, the architects have created a truly remarkable and sustainable home that embraces both functionality and aesthetics
