Tallinn Architecture Biennale

FROM Sept. 4, 2013 TO Sept. 30, 2013
  • 04/10/2013 - Highlighted socialist buildings

Tallinn Architecture Biennale “Recycling Socialism” attracted 6200 visitors to exhibitions and other events during September. Tallinn hosted many well-known contemporary architects and theorists starting with Bjarke Ingels (BIG) as a jury member of the vision competition to the radical Italian architect Pier Vittorio Aureli (Dogma) as an author at the Curators’ Exhibition and speaker of the symposium.

For the first time TAB opened the unique “sprat tin hall” of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the public inspiring other event organizers to use it as well. Also for the first time since many years the doors of Linnahall, the grand soviet concert hall were opened for the architecture schools exhibition. The vision competition of Väike-Õismäe that received more than 80 entries inspired ideas for the development of the district. The exhibition of the vision competition will be opened in Riga already this month.

While dealing with the soviet era architecture TAB aimed to inspire architects, city planners and citizens to look for the best ideas rather than presenting ready-made projects.

Pier Vittorio Aureli considers the meaning of the biennale: "I think that we would not be here discussing these issues and making these projects or even having the Biennale if we did not think that events like this spread certain ideas. Which inevitably also results in building places that are really the actors that at the end produce the city."

The catalogue of Tallinn Architecture Biennale will be published in the end of October and can be ordered from .....
