Arquitectura en Movimiento Workshop has designed a SDM Apartment, a two story apartment located in central Mumbai, India. Looking at the pictures of the interior, it is easy to notice the ambivalence of this structure. On one hand, the predominant style is consistent throughout the whole structure, on the other hand, the specific details of the project vary from room to room, according to the needs and personalities of users. The result of an enquiry the projectors carried on before drafting the interiors, through a deep interview of each family member, aimed at understanding needs and desires. Regardless, one main element remains prominent, the sharp contrast between the quiet and balanced structure of the house, and the messy environment of the Indian metropolis.

The main element of the whole house is without a doubt the morbid stairs, the observer can look at the stairs from any side of the big ground floor: a structure that mixes and matches futuristic shapes and vintage tonalities of the wood used, and is replicated with walls and ceilings, thus creating a charming game of light and shadow which widens the perception of spaces.

The pooja (or prayer) room is the result of a deep investigation, expressed in colors and lighting systems, studied to mix well the traditional furniture, complemented with religious statues, with the modernity of the rest of the house. A place of contemplation, peace and total harmony.

SDM Apartment is an excellent example of harmony of shapes, a proof that mixing up past and present of design can truly be a winning strategy.
