Flow by Cheng-Tsung Feng

2013 is the year of bamboo and this has been a crucial driver for the ideation of an industrial design tool that is hard to describe with other words than “unbelievable”. Two young talents from Taiwan, designer Cheng-Tsung Feng and craft artist Kao-Ming Chen, did a great job in creating their long chair Flow, entirely made up of bamboo, which is par definition the most elastic natural fiber.
The name of the chair is not left to chance: as a matter of fact, it draws inspiration from its look itself, which is “light and free as the clouds that can calm the mind”. Looking at the chair, which was recently exhibited at Milan Design week 2013, it is easy to agree with the two designers: Flow chair is an incredibly fine twist of bamboo strips, and the complex shape is well balanced by the lightness of materials. The whole structure is composed of three single tubes of bamboo that are split at the top and woven to create the morbid seat.
Bamboo balls form the base of the chair, which can be replicated on a standardized basis. The surface of the chair, on the other hand, is the fruit of a careful handcraft job, which renders every single piece unique and memorable.
This product was created in order to develop a new way of working with bamboo, a flexible, indestructible material that so far has been treated in a limited range of matters. Flow is not only a celebration of the winning marriage between natural material and modern industrial technique of fabrication, but also a breathtaking interior design complement that will render even the most anonymous environment…just unforgettable.
