Dunes Bowl by Alessandro Isola

Dunes Bowl by Alessandro Isola - Cover

The Dunes Bowl takes its name from the dunes of sand found in the desert and works as a sculptural dishware. Abstracting and reinterpreting the natural shape, the designer creates an organic piece characterized by two concave sections of different sizes used to hold snacks or fresh fruit.

3D printed with laser sintered nylon powder, the object has been perforated for both aesthetic and functional purposes. In the first case, the airy pattern gives an interesting light and shadow effect and gives texture to the white surface. The second purpose of this perforated pattern is to minimize the use of material during the 3D printing, and to allow the bowl to be solid only where it really needs to be, leaving the other parts light and airy.

Alessandro Isola created the object so that it does not sit flat on a surface but uses the two bowls as support, the third support coming from the edge of the product. The inclination assumed by the sculptural piece puts emphasis on the lighting effect, creating interesting patterned shadows through the perforated surface.

Dunes bowl was previewed at Brera Design District at the Milan Design Week 2014.
