Ribbonesia

Ribbonesia - Cover

Ribbonesia takes ribbon and transforms it into incredibly intricate and captivating new shapes. The art is similar to origami, except the medium of ribbon allows for the ability to create soft, round edges to contrast the crisp folds that paper tends to offer. The creators at Ribbionesia describe themselves as a small collective that uses ribbon to create “new characters” and “new life” – and the finished products do have a vibrant, lively quality to them. They are buoyant, colorful and creative. From the smallest pieces that take the shapes of rabbits or a simplistic emperor penguin no more than two inches high, to the elaborate undertakings commissioned by designers or department stores, such as intricate animal masks and displays that reach two or three stories high, Ribbonesia displays patience, ingenuity and passion in their work. Baku Maeda, the artist that represents Ribbonesia, describes his passion simply with the fact that he “loves to make things. He can’t stop.”

Their artwork has been featured in print and online; it provides unique layouts for websites as well as an eye-catching component in print ads. The company is based out of Japan, but their work has been recognized in other counties, and was the winner of the “One Show Design” award in 2012, along with a handful of other awards in previous years.
