  • 10/07/2014 - Country in focus: France

SDW concept is designed in a way that each year regional audience make close encounter with one particular country or region that has earned its respect on global level by permanently submitting high quality design. In order to get closer to that region or country SDW management puts very special accent to the programme section the Country in Focus. In 2014 we have a pleasure to have France as country in focus.
Among the brightest examples of the leading national design movements today are the groundbreaking accomplishments of contemporary French design. By its historical roots deep in French design education or the social ideals of modernism that became central to the nation’s cultural dialogue, exploring the enormously rich design history of France has proven to be vital for understanding of the social role of the professional industrial designer. Especially, when it comes to public work initiatives and debates about design.

Although driven by aims of functionality, simplicity, and affordability on one hand, on the other hand French design has also set the standards of high quality, luxury and exclusivity, which answers the eternal designer’s question of how to make a perfect balance between these two.

Looking at current French design scene, the SDW team has approached 10 the most distinguished designers and studios that by its production display genuine and up to day image of the country. The programme France Country in Focus on SDW2014 is organized in cooperation with French Embassy and French institute in Skopje.

Announces the Award-Winning Label Design for “Tikveš” Winery’s Chardonnay

Amazed by the quality and the creativity of label designs submitted by creative people from four continents, “Tikveš” Winery decided to increase the number of and the award fund from 500 EUR to 5000 EUR in total

The creative solution of the author Dijana Dimitrievska from Macedonia is the first-ranked design on the international competition organized by Skopje Design Week and “Tikveš”. This unique design work will be used as the label for the 2013 harvest Chardonnay of the “Tikveš” Winery.

A total of 247 designers from 29 countries applied on the open competition announced two months ago. “Tikveš” was presented with 463 label designs. Due to the great number of quality solutions offered, instead of one award in the amount of 500 EUR, “Tikveš” Winery decided to increase the number of awards as follows: 1,500 EUR for the best label design, two awards in the amount of 1,000 EUR each for the second-ranked designs and three awards in the amount of 500 EUR each for the third-ranked designs.

“The great number of quality creative solutions we were presented with exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. This confirms the fact that top-quality wine produced by “Tikveš” is an endless source of inspiration not only for the in-country, but also for creative people from all quarters of the world. In turn, this motivated us to increase the award fund, because “Tikveš” is a company that knows how to appreciate and adequately award quality”, said the marketing manager at “Tikveš” Winery, Elena Mladenovska Jelenkovik.

In addition to monetary awards, the best designs have the chance to be applied on “Tikveš” Winery’s top-quality products that will be marketed in the country and abroad.

Expressing his satisfaction with the overall process of receiving and selecting the best design solutions, as well as the cooperation with “Tikveš” Winery, the director of Skopje Design Week, Aleksandar Velinovski said: “This is what members of the design and creative community desired and needed, while the business gains an added value, aesthetics and recognition. We are encouraged by what we achieved together with “Tikveš”, because once again it demonstrated a sense for the value that good designs bring with them. At the same time, this is an excellent example for other in-country companies that any investment in the identity and in the brand is justified.”

As part of Skopje Design Week 2013, “Tikveš” Winery organized a special exhibition called “The Best of the South”, which perfectly matched the authenticity of “Kurshumli an” venue and which, due to the excellent reception among visitors, will be part of other regional festivals and exhibitions organized in the course of 2014. • 24/09/2013 - Good design makes product understandable

Skopje Design Week 2013 - place where all magic happens

Skopje Design Week 2013 - All roads lead to Kurshumli An from 1st to 6th October. SDW is a design oriented multidisciplinary platform, which is wakening up the society in which we live, creating connection between Macedonian designers and companies, in order to achieve a symbiosis of esthetics, technological innovation, marketing and production.

The purpose of SDW is to bring together business and design sectors, i.e. to show how creativity can be used in the production process of companies. The design is a "must have" if you want to give added value on the product and strive to win as many markets. Functional and designed product is the card on which play only smart companies, and on the end only, good design makes a product understandable. That is the formula that simply "putting" the intention to sell and export outside Macedonia.

Ten top designers from Switzerland, which is country in focus this year, will discover how Switzerland manages to create products and become a global brand. The benefits for the Macedonian companies, is that they will have the opportunity to cooperate with these names on many levels from design point of view.

The concept of the SDW remains the same, but we are changing the content. We have a new country in focus - Switzerland. On the ground floor of Kursumli An are the commercial entities, companies, individual brands, and young brands that are presented in the Macedonian market. On the ground floor also, will be the concept stores of the brands that came from the region. These concept stores are interested to find partners here. The second floor will be reserved for group shows. There we can see Croatian, Balkan and Swiss designers and young designers who now come to "light". Novelty is the "food corner" where there will be presentations, contests, cooking workshops. This year we invested more in the evening program. Several bands from Slovenia and Serbia will come for the first time in Macedonia. There will be a three or four workshops within which will improve collaboration between designers and businesses, which will have foreign mentors. - says Aleksandar Velinovski - director of Public Room, organizer of Skopje Design Week

The overall program of SDW is an ambitious mix of innovative disciplines, ranging from product and industrial design, fashion, jewelry, technological, industrial and environmental issues, contemporary visual arts and business issues closely related to arts and culture. This exhibition and educational programme is toped up with the special selection of music performances, theatre and entertainment in the evening hours. The entire programme will bring all generations of people together by offering them memorable creative experience.

The programme concept will be held from 10 - 17 hours (all workshops, lectures and other forms of scientific - educational and practical exams). In the afternoon from 17 to 20 hours is the time for business contacts in a relaxed atmosphere (Chill-out music, culinary presentations, etc..), While the evening program - well known as the best party in town - it's for all audiences. This year we are getting special attention to the music programme and it will be a miracle to get the epithet of music platform in which the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy. Beautiful view of the evening's concerts and DJ sets with hundreds, sometimes thousands people, while all exhibitions will still be opened for viewing until late at night, with one word Skopje Design Week will be place where all magic happens.

Skopje Design Week gave input in certain directions, our know-how is already used and I am very glad. We are open for any cooperation with each institution. Not accidentally we involved the faculties, we want to include young designers (during the study) and after that, we want to get them an image that means affirmation, design, process or idea of the placing on the market. The workshops brought us significant experience. They helped us to form a strategy and program for Skopje Design Week who is based on specific analyzes, and from the experiences of those workshops. We detected all anomalies and loopholes. Designers need to be productive, not to stay at level of drawers. We want to see concrete products placed on the market. It has to happen in cooperation with companies. - says Marta Grnarova - Naumovska, programme director of Skopje Design Week

Skopje Design Week Skopje - Macedonia

The idea behind SDW is that Skopje within 6 days programme unites on annual bases the world's most remarkable designers and innovators in one place and gives them chance to communicate with the broad audience, regional corporate sector and educational institutions.

As totally neutral place where no strong culture is dominant the city of Skopje is perfect place for experiments and different concepts especially for the creative minds. SDW is a design oriented multicultural platform that aims to stimulate creative economy in the Balkans.

The overall program of SDW is an ambitious mix of innovative disciplines ranging from product, graphic and fashion, jewelry, technological and environmental issues and business issues closely related to design and innovation.

Continuation during the whole year is achieved by linking the activities with the regional and other international festivals and permanently upgrading the international brand and platform Ministry of Pleasure.
