Mediatheque Mont de Marsan by Archi5

Mediatheque Mont de Marsan by Archi5 - Cover

Rising up in the middle of Bosquet barracks, the mediatheque is a strong cultural symbol of the Marsan urban area.

It was conceived as a covered cultural square, where many different aspects could meet at once. Its design and architecture are its own statement: visible, distinctive, but not overpowering.

The clean envelope and pure geometric lines of the building perfectly comply with the austerity of the surroundings, while at the same time introducing a fresh dialogue with the city.

All of this was possible thanks to the choice of the Achi5 Studio, by opting for glass. Glass guarantees continuity between the outside and the interior of the media library. The façades of the new modern building act like a mirror, reflecting the classical and severe architecture of the barracks.

The central location of the mediatheque in the military drill yard inspired Archi5 with a design based on four different perspectives, which differ from one another by adapting to the direction they face.

At night the media library confirms its identity by becoming a discrete lantern and bringing the square to life.

The interiors are entirely open spaces and centre on, and around, a patio, which is inspired by Matisse’s painting of acanthus leaves, and recalls Alvar Aalto’s vases as well.

The open space based on visual continuity, is organised naturally and the user’s intimacy is created by architectural elements that inspire visual interplay.

Light spreads harmoniously recreating a relaxed and contemplative space.
